Using text-based tabs is one of the most used patterns in modern interface design, the main difference is that a tab bar leads you to a whole new part of the product, while tabs display you sub information of the area of the product you are.

Desktop based tabs

Tabs on desktop are quite similar to how you would space buttons. If the top/bottom padding is 8px the safest route is the left/ right padding to be 3x (24px). This would allow lead to a safe area between one of the tabs and the other to be 6x (48px).
