Readability
There are extensive lists of rules to keep in mind when working with text and spacing typography. We are adding space between lines for one simple reason: to make it easy for the reader to find the next line. How often have you read the same line twice? Or skipped a line? This means that the line height was most likely too short. This problem is escalated when text lines are too long. The further your eyes have to jump to read the following line, the easier it is to lose your place.
Creating Hierarchy
Having the right amount of characters on each line is key to the readability of text.
It shouldn’t merely be a design that dictates the width of your text, it should also be a matter of legibility. Many tests have been done proving that the best usability principle for readability on mobile is no more than nine words per line, or 50-60 characters.
Long Paragraphs
The safest route for you to space your long paragraphs is by multiplying it by 1.5. This will always ensure you have enough breathing room between the two lines. However, if font size is bigger for this long paragraph, you can also multiply the line height by 2.
Big Headlines
As the text gets bigger our eyes don’t need as much help. This means that you might not need this extra line spacing for a large headline, and a line-height of 1to 1.2 is perfectly fine.
Spacing Paragraphs
The simplest rule for spacing paragraphs is to equal to the font-size of the content using. By that, we can remember spacing easier. Besides, use paragraph spacing instead of hitting enter to go down a line. As of spacing when you hit enter this is too larger, the paragraph will control white space easier between two consecutive paragraphs.
Creating Rhythm
When you have a small headline, it should be closer to the paragraph text. Small headline = small spacing – this helps highlight an essential part of the text and not break the reading flow. There isn’t a set number, but l’d advise going for something between 8px and 12px. If there is a large title, you can’t have the same spacing as a small title. Having a small spacing will make it super hard to read, so if you bump up spacing, it will create a better contrast with the tiny text. This creates a better visual balance and improves readability.
Spacing Different Content Areas
Having the same spacing will be challenging for people to scan through your content and separate each part of the text from another. Thus, if you have a second title or area that starts after your paragraph, a safe rule is to double the spacing and make it easier to scan and read. Adding more space will make the transition from one topic to the next one clearer.
Images are more than just decoration; they have the power to make or break a user’s experience. They are visually heavier as our eyes are used to it; adding extra space will help you create more breathing room between vibrant imagery and the context.
